LATEST NEWS LETTER FROM GEORGETOWN GUYANA 1-2012
COMMENT
We extend Happy New Year greetings to all
our members, well-wishers and
supporters. 2011 was a very good year for
the XGDF Association of Guyana and with
your continued support, 2012 could be
even more successful.

Our major objectives continue to be to:

a.        To promote and maintain harmony
and camaraderie among ex-members of
the Guyana Defence Force, resident in
Guyana.

b.        To establish and maintain an
effective network of communication linking
ex members of the Guyana Defence Force
in Guyana.

c.        To provide support to ex-members of
the Guyana Defence Force who may have
become indigent and needy after leaving
the Force.

We urge all members to spread the word
about the organisation. Encourage any old
soldier who is not a member to come and
join us. In unity there is strength.

At the break of this New Year, our list of
shut-ins and members with disabilities,
stands at 81. It is our duty to assist them
and our moral obligation not to forget them.
Let’s put our shoulders to the wheel and
together we can achieve the
impossible. We continue to pray for the
completion of the Veteran’s Rest Home.

Fellow vets, let’s not grow weary while doing
good, for in due season we shall reap if we do
not lose heart. Let’s maintain the bond
throughout 2012.

STATEMENT ISSUED BY XGDF
ASSOCIATION OF GUYANA

It is with grave concern, that we the
members, of the XGDF Association of Guyana,
register our disapproval of the actions taken
by Officers and Ranks of the Guyana Police
Force on Tuesday  6th December 2011. On
that day several citizens were shot in what,
any expert in crowd control or internal
security would consider an unnecessary and
unwarranted escalation of force, by the
Police. We would like to strongly condemn the
treatment that was meted out to Brigadier
(ret) Edward Collins MSM MSS (past Chief of
Staff of the Guyana Defence Force), The
disrespectful manner in which he was
treated, the verbal abuse leveled at him by
junior ranks, the lack of courtesy extended,
and ultimately his injuries sustained from
gunshot wounds at a very close distance.
As ex-military men trained in the art of crowd
control, we see the events of 6th December
as a low point in our Post Independence
Internal Security history. We condemn in the
strongest manner
what happened to Brigadier Collins (a very
senior military commander) and insist that a
commission of inquiry be convened immediately
to look into this matter. It is our understanding
from our brother officer, that prior to the
unwarranted shooting, he was negotiating with
the onsite commander and had taken
responsibility for the peaceful demonstrators.
We therefore ask that the Onsite Commander
be removed from operational duties until such
time as the Commission renders its verdict.
The Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana
Police Force have always shared and enjoyed a
good working relationship, based on mutual
respect, and an appreciation of, and
commitment to, upholding the rule of law and
defence of the constitution. That one of our own
would be so brutally disrespected is cause for
much pain and our membership call for
immediate actions to redress this wrong.
