WOMEN'S ARMY CORPS, GUYANA DEFENCE FORCE............
45 years old this month.
This website dedicates the month of February 2012 to the observation of the 45th
anniversary of the formation of the Women's Army Corp of the GDF.
As noted elsewhere, there will be quite a large number of ceremonies and events
conducted by the GDF and its various veteran groups to commemorate this milestone,
(XGDF NY itself plans a Church Service for Sunday 12th February, and a formal Ball for
14th April.) so rather than duplicate the sentiments and wellwishes of those who will no
doubt participate in those ceremonies, we on this website will confine ourselves to
facilitating a general discussion among our readers about the personalities and events
that contributed to the longevity of the W.A.C.
You will see below various thumbnail images which will open up to full-size photos if you
double-click on the image; from the full size photos you will be prompted to comment on a
special form. Comments will be posted with a minimum of delay next to the relevant photo.
We would also welcome scanned (digital) images of the WAC experience in the
possession of our readers.
It is our hope that this exercise will attract the attention of friends, relatives and
acquaintances (especially the younger generations) of the original pioneers of the
W.A.C., and serve as a virtual reunion for that hardy band of individuals who contributed
so much to Guyana in their youth.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I am honored to extend sincere and warm congratulations to the officers and soldiers of
the Womens Army Corp of the Guyana Defence Force both past and present. I also
salute those of you who 45 years ago accepted the challenge and the call to service, and
became pioneers in what is now an integral and vital element of the GDF. I humbly
acknowledge those who came after for maintaining the tradition and reaffirming the
pledge of service to our nation. You have much to be proud of as you continue to solidify
your place in the proud history of the national army. As we celebrate this 45th
anniversary let us look forward to a future filled with hope, happiness and good health.
On behalf of the XGDF Association of New York, I wish you continued success and God's
blessings.
Joseph Glasgow
President XGDF NY

Windee Algernon is GDF’S first female ‘full’Colonel
January 20, 2012 | By KNews | Filed Under News
In a history making move, Windee Algernon became the first female full colonel of the
Guyana Defence force.
Her promotion was announced as the Annual Officers’ Conference opened.
Colonel Algernon’s elevation to her new rank is also quite significant since she is the first
serving member of any of the Caribbean’s armed forces to hold such an appointment.
She joined the army in 1980.
Guyana Defence Force Chief-of-Staff Gary Best announced that apart from Algernon,
Commander-in-Chief President Donald Ramotar had approved the promotions of several
other officers.
